Linwood's Tornado Page
Summer 1988
The following tornado touched
down to the north of my office building on June 14, 1988. For the 15-minutes it
was on the ground it never came out from behind this building. On this
particular day, some five tornados actually touched down in the Denver, Colorado
metropolitan area. These pictures were taken looking north from my office just
south of I-25 and Orchard Road in the Denver Tech Center.
The tornado below touched down near Parker Road and I-225. It was on the ground about five minutes. It is a bit harder to see as it was partially hidden in the rain curtain and is "low-contrast." These pictures were taken looking northeast from my office building just south of I-25 and Orchard Road in the Denver Tech Center.
The following three pictures show a tornado on the ground further north. This touched down somewhere near I-225 and Mississippi in Aurora. News reports indicated it had landed, and stayed, in a (then-empty) field. The first picture shows the tornado in its glory while the one on the right shows it dying ("roping out"). These pictures were taken looking northeast from my office just south of I-25 and Orchard Road in the Denver Tech Center.
The following two pictures show a hard-to-see tornado that touched down in Denver near the intersection of South Broadway and Evans Street. A local eatery and other buildings were heavily damaged. One person was slightly injured at a telephone company garage when a concrete wall collapsed. This tornado is very low contrast. You can see the funnel just sticking out of the cloud but the actual tornadic shaft (reaching all the way to the ground) it barely visible. On the left picture a reflection from inside the office complicates the picture of the funnel/tornado. The picture on the right shows the tornado's shaft with more clarity. Occasional "whisps" of condensed clouds twisted the way at times up the funnel making for interesting viewing (but not available for still pictures... like trying to take pictures of lightning... hard to capture).
Summer 2002
In late June, 2002, while driving
towards Parker, Colorado from Denver International Airport (DIA), we
captured two pictures of an unreported tornado on the ground in an empty
field. This low-contrast tornado lasted about two minutes and was gone. By the
time I spotted it, safely stopped alongside E470, and fired up the digital
camera, it had begun to dissipate. Non-the-less, it was there although we never
heard it reported on any local radio station and/or the National Weather Service
radio broadcast. We saw it!
